Raja Yoga Calculator
Enter your birth details and the tool computes your Vedic sidereal chart, then scans it for classical raja yoga combinations of kendra and trikona lords, plus the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
Method: sidereal longitudes from Keplerian orbital elements (Paul Schlyter’s method) with lunar and Jupiter/Saturn perturbation terms, minus the Lahiri mean ayanamsa; sidereal Lagna from local sidereal time; whole-sign houses from the Lagna sign. Dignities are sign-level only. Interpretations are traditional astrology for reflection, not fact.
What is raja yoga?
Raja yoga is the name Vedic astrology gives to planetary combinations that signal rise, recognition, and authority in a birth chart. The word raja means king, and a raja yoga is read as a combination that can lift a person into a position of influence, responsibility, or public standing. Classical texts describe hundreds of named yogas, but the core idea behind raja yoga is simple and comes straight from the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra: it is formed by combinations of kendra and trikona lords, the rulers of the most powerful houses in the chart.
To understand raja yoga you need two house families. The kendra houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses from the Lagna (the ascendant). These are the angular houses, the pillars of the chart, and they represent the houses of action: self, home and foundations, partnerships, and career. The trikona houses are the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses. These are the trine houses, the houses of fortune and dharma: self, creativity and intelligence, and luck and higher wisdom. The 1st house belongs to both families, which is why the Lagna and its lord are given such weight in Vedic astrology.
Every sign has a ruling planet, and because houses are counted from the Lagna sign, every house also has a ruler. For the classical seven planets the rulerships are: Aries ruled by Mars, Taurus by Venus, Gemini by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Virgo by Mercury, Libra by Venus, Scorpio by Mars, Sagittarius by Jupiter, Capricorn by Saturn, Aquarius by Saturn, and Pisces by Jupiter. A “kendra lord” is the planet that rules one of the kendra houses in your chart, and a “trikona lord” rules one of the trikona houses. Which planets these are changes with every Lagna, so the same planet can be a powerful yoga-former in one chart and an ordinary planet in another.
The classical raja yoga rules this calculator checks are four. First, a kendra lord placed in a trikona house, or a trikona lord placed in a kendra house: the houses of action and the houses of fortune trade places, which tradition reads as fortune flowing into achievement. Second, a conjunction of a kendra lord and a trikona lord in the same sign: the two powers join forces directly. Third, parivartana, a mutual exchange of signs between a kendra lord and a trikona lord, where each planet sits in the sign the other rules: the two houses are tied together by an unbreakable link. Fourth, the Lagna lord placed in a kendra or trikona is counted as supporting strength for the whole chart, amplifying any yoga that is present. Alongside these, the calculator checks the five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn placed in its own, moolatrikona, or exaltation sign in a kendra house, which form Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya, and Sasha yoga respectively.
One honest note belongs up front. Finding a raja yoga in your chart is not a promise of a throne. Classical writers treat yogas as indicators of potential whose expression depends on planetary strength, dasha timing, and the overall condition of the chart. This page and its calculator present the traditional rules and your chart’s verdicts for reflection, not as predictions about your life.
How to use the raja yoga calculator
- Enter your birth date and birth time. The time must be your local clock time at birth. The calculator needs it because the Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and every house, and therefore every yoga, is counted from the Lagna. If your birth time is only approximate, treat the verdicts as approximate too.
- Pick your birth city or enter coordinates manually. The dropdown covers 34 major cities and fills in latitude, longitude, and the UTC offset automatically. If your birthplace is not listed, choose the custom option and type the coordinates and the UTC offset that was in force on your birth date. Daylight saving is not applied automatically, so adjust the offset yourself if your birthplace observed it.
- Press “Check my raja yogas.” The tool computes your sidereal chart instantly and shows four result cards below the form.
- Read your Lagna card first. It shows your sidereal ascendant sign and degree, your Lagna lord, and the Lahiri ayanamsa used for the conversion. This is the foundation everything else is measured from.
- Read your raja yoga verdicts. Each detected combination is listed with its name, the exact planets and houses involved, and a one-line traditional meaning. If no raja yoga is found, the tool says so plainly and tells you what was found instead, such as a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga.
- Check the Pancha Mahapurusha verdicts and the planet table. All five Mahapurusha yogas get an explicit present-or-not verdict, and the planet table lists every planet’s sidereal sign, degree, house from Lagna, and sign-level dignity.
- Copy or print your result. The copy button saves a plain-text summary of the whole reading for your notes, and the print button produces a clean black-and-white version.
How it works
The calculator begins with real astronomy. It computes geocentric tropical longitudes for the seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) using Paul Schlyter’s Keplerian-element method: each planet’s position is derived from its orbital elements, Kepler’s equation is solved by Newton iteration, and perturbation terms are applied for the Moon and for Jupiter and Saturn. The ecliptic latitude of each planet is included in the geocentric conversion. This engine was cross-checked against ZodiaScope’s verified chart-report engine over six test dates and agreed to better than 0.000006 degrees on every planet.
The tropical positions are then converted to the sidereal zodiac used by Vedic astrology by subtracting the Lahiri mean ayanamsa: 23.85696 degrees at the J2000 epoch plus 1.396971 degrees per Julian century. For the worked example below, a December 1993 birth, the ayanamsa comes out to 23.77290 degrees. The Lagna is computed from Greenwich Mean Sidereal Time plus your birthplace longitude, using the closed-form rising-ecliptic-point formula, and the same ayanamsa is subtracted to make it sidereal.
Houses follow the whole-sign system: the entire Lagna sign is the 1st house, the next sign is the 2nd, and so on. From this the tool derives the kendra houses (1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona houses (1, 5, 9) and assigns each house its classical single lord: Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius. It then runs the four raja yoga checks in order: kendra lord in a trikona or trikona lord in a kendra; conjunction of a kendra lord and a trikona lord in one sign; parivartana between a kendra lord and a trikona lord; and the Lagna lord’s placement as supporting strength.
The Pancha Mahapurusha check is fully deterministic. It tests each of the five non-luminary planets against its qualifying signs in a kendra house: Mars in Aries, Scorpio, or Capricorn gives Ruchaka; Mercury in Gemini or Virgo gives Bhadra; Jupiter in Sagittarius, Pisces, or Cancer gives Hamsa; Venus in Taurus, Libra, or Pisces gives Malavya; Saturn in Capricorn, Aquarius, or Libra gives Sasha. These sign sets match the classical own, moolatrikona, and exaltation dignities described in the traditional texts. The dignity column in the planet table uses the same classical scheme: exalted (Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra), debilitated (the opposite signs), moolatrikona (Sun in Leo, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Aries, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Sagittarius, Venus in Libra, Saturn in Aquarius), own sign, or neutral, and it is strictly sign-level.
The honest caveats: this tool uses whole-sign houses rather than Bhava or Placidus houses, it considers only the seven classical planets (Rahu and Ketu are not part of these particular checks), it uses one classical lord per sign, and its dignities ignore exact degree, combustion, and aspects. The yoga verdicts follow the traditional textbook rules and are offered for reflection and study, not as factual predictions.
Worked example
Here is a fully worked example so you can see exactly what the tool computes. The calculator loads with this example ready: December 25, 1993, 11:10 local time (UTC minus 5), New York (latitude 40.71, longitude minus 74.00).
The ayanamsa for this birth moment is 23.77290 degrees. The sidereal Lagna is 323.576 degrees, which is Aquarius 3.6, so the Lagna lord is Saturn. Counting whole-sign houses from Aquarius, the kendra houses fall in Aquarius, Taurus, Leo, and Scorpio, whose lords are Saturn (1st), Venus (4th), Sun (7th), and Mars (10th). The trikona houses fall in Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra, whose lords are Saturn (1st), Mercury (5th), and Venus (9th).
The seven sidereal planet positions are: Sun in Sagittarius 10.1 (11th house), Moon in Taurus 1.8 (4th house, Exalted), Mars in Sagittarius 10.5 (11th house), Mercury in Sagittarius 4.9 (11th house), Jupiter in Libra 15.0 (9th house), Venus in Sagittarius 4.8 (11th house), and Saturn in Aquarius 2.7 (1st house, Moolatrikona). Every one of these numbers was independently hand-verified against the engine.
Running the four checks: Saturn rules the 1st house, which is both a kendra and a trikona, and stands in the 1st house, so it triggers both the “kendra lord in a trikona” and “trikona lord in a kendra” combinations. Then the conjunction check finds five kendra-lord/trikona-lord pairings sharing the sign Sagittarius: Mercury (trikona lord of the 5th) with Venus (kendra lord of the 4th), Mercury with the Sun (kendra lord of the 7th), the Sun with Venus (trikona lord of the 9th), Mars (kendra lord of the 10th) with Mercury, and Mars with Venus. No parivartana is present. That is 7 classical raja yoga combinations in total. The Lagna lord Saturn stands in the 1st house, a kendra, which the tool reports as supporting strength. Finally, Saturn in Aquarius in the 1st house satisfies the Sasha condition, so the Pancha Mahapurusha verdict reads “Present: Sasha (Saturn)”.
For contrast, try a chart with nothing to report. Set the birth details to February 7, 1969, 18:55 local time (UTC plus 5.5), Delhi (28.61, 77.21). The Lagna is Leo 6.8, the planets scatter across Capricorn, Virgo, Libra, and Pisces, and the tool reports plainly: no classical raja yoga found, no Pancha Mahapurusha yoga, and the Lagna lord (the Sun, in Capricorn in the 6th house) is not in a kendra or trikona. That honest negative result is as much a part of the tool’s job as the rich example above.
Frequently asked questions
What is raja yoga in Vedic astrology?
Raja yoga is a planetary combination in Vedic astrology associated with rise, recognition, and authority. Classically it is formed by combinations of kendra lords (rulers of houses 1, 4, 7, 10) and trikona lords (rulers of houses 1, 5, 9), such as a kendra lord placed in a trikona, a conjunction of a kendra lord and a trikona lord, or a mutual exchange of signs between them.
How does the raja yoga calculator work?
The calculator computes your Vedic sidereal chart from your birth date, time, and place using Keplerian orbital elements minus the Lahiri ayanamsa, finds your Lagna, assigns whole-sign houses, and then runs four classical Parashara checks: kendra lord in a trikona or trikona lord in a kendra, conjunction of a kendra lord and trikona lord, parivartana between them, and the Lagna lord’s placement. It also checks all five Pancha Mahapurusha yogas.
What are kendra and trikona houses?
Kendra houses are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses counted from the Lagna; they are the angular houses of action. Trikona houses are the 1st, 5th, and 9th houses; they are the trine houses of fortune and dharma. The 1st house belongs to both groups, which is why the Lagna and its lord carry extra weight.
What is Pancha Mahapurusha yoga?
Pancha Mahapurusha yogas are five classical combinations formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn occupies its own, moolatrikona, or exaltation sign in a kendra house. They are named Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus), and Sasha (Saturn), and tradition associates each with a distinct set of noble qualities.
Do I need my exact birth time to check raja yoga?
Yes. The Lagna changes roughly every two hours, and every house, house lord, and therefore every raja yoga is counted from the Lagna. Without an accurate birth time the ascendant cannot be fixed, so the calculator requires your birth time. If your time is only approximate, treat the verdicts as approximate too.
What does it mean if no raja yoga is found in my chart?
It means none of the four classical kendra/trikona lord combinations is present in your whole-sign chart. The calculator says this plainly and shows what was found instead, such as a Pancha Mahapurusha yoga or a well-placed Lagna lord. Classical texts treat yogas as indicators of potential, not guarantees, so an empty result is simply information, not a verdict on your life.
Is this raja yoga calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free, and no account or signup is needed. Enter your birth date, time, and birthplace to get your sidereal Lagna, your raja yoga combinations, Pancha Mahapurusha verdicts, and a full planet table. Use the copy button to save your result as plain text for your notes.
